Interactive wall and data visualization

eBay has inaugurated a new 20,000 square foot corporate space. In this custom-made space called Main Street, a 165-inch (4K) screen and six high-resolution LED columns occupy the space of a large entrance hall. All synchronized, the screens display real-time statistics of sales of a product category for the selected time and day.

My role was to develop the modules (or widgets) that display sales data. The project challenges are organized around 3 axes:

  1. Connections to different APIs: in order to correctly display the data, precise connection and error management (graceful degradation and fallback) to different APIs has been implemented.
  2. Data-oriented animation: to make this digital data attractive, excellent knowledge of web technologies was required in order to create pleasant animations faithful to the design.
  3. Using multiple technologies combined: Managing a screen of this size and a complex particle system required the use of different technologies. Caching elements, creating animations accordingly and good communication between the teams responsible for each of these technologies made it possible to make a unified, high-quality product without revealing the different components of the installation.

The final product was deployed in San Jose and was very well received by the customer and the public.
